Human Attention Span in Decline due to..
Oh look, a picture!
Did you know that humans now have a shorter attention span than goldfish? It is no question that our attention is being stretched all across the place.
So the question really becomes: why is everyone so busy?
But are we? Or do we just feel busy because there's a never ending newsfeed to scroll through, another new Netflix series to catch up on, a never-ending list of emails to reply to, notification pop ups every 10 seconds.
Good news for you. This overwhelming feeling can be managed.
The Root Causes of Attention Deficiency:
1. Information Abundance
With so much information at our fingertips, it's harder to decipher fact from fiction. Our short attention spans and Internet "opinions" make us more susceptible to fall prey to alternative facts and post-truth politics.
2. Internet Addiction
Every time you check your phone, your brain releases a small dose of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward and pleasure centers, this is a main cause for all forms of addiction.
So yes, in some sense, every time you unlock your phone, it's essentially like taking a hit of cocaine.
This isn't your fault. In fact, most social media platforms succeed on getting you addicted to their platform.
How to take control of your time:
- Be aware every time you mindlessly check your phone.
- Challenge yourself everyday to unplug for an hour.
- Try out a digital detox, put your phone away for 24 hours on a weekend.
- Use an app to track how you're spending your time. OFFTIME for your phone, StayFocused for your web browser.
- Enjoy your life.
