Wind Turbines – An Introduction
In recent years, increased interest and controversy have focused on wind farms and their harmful environmental impacts. Much controversy can be attributed to the fact that Wind Energy is a controversial energy sector due to the impact it has upon natural resources and the impact it has on the environment. As new technologies are developed and alternative energy becomes an even greater influence in our lives, this debate will continue to rage.
While there may be some degree of controversy associated
with the environmental impacts of wind farms, the impact they have upon local communities is actually quite negligible. The environmental impact of wind farms is relatively minimal when compared to the impact of other low-carbon energy sources. In fact, wind energy has the lowest impact upon the environment of all the energy options available to us. The few major problems associated with wind turbines are associated with the impact they have upon property values and the reduced value provided to residents of the communities surrounding the farms.
A few decades ago
when wind turbines first began being considered for use as a method for producing renewable energy, many people and companies were opposed to the idea. Many claimed that there was no need for these farms as there were ample sources of naturally occurring energy that was suitable for the purpose. Although there were arguments both for and against the use of wind turbines on a large scale, modern-day green movements argue that these fears are unfounded and that wind farms should be used to create a sustainable source of renewable energy.
One of the problems associated with the widespread
use of wind energy is that land must be taken away from communities to allow for the large-scale production of wind energy. In many rural communities, the lack of space makes it impossible to build large-scale wind turbines. This has led to the push for more flexibility in building regulations to allow for the production of wind energy on a large scale in communities that would otherwise be excluded from such production. These regulations have also resulted in the slow development of wind farms, which can often result in delays and increased costs.
Another issue facing the implementation of large-scale wind turbine
production is pollution. The existence of wind turbines near populated areas can result in the pollution of the local environment. Wind-generated electricity produces considerable amounts of pollution in the form of particulate matter and noise. The use of wind energy as a renewable energy source is likely to increase the demand for clean energy sources and this can only exacerbate existing concerns about the impact of global climate change.
Wind turbines are a key element of a green
and sustainable energy future. If we are to move away from fossil fuels and create a truly green society, we must take advantage of the technological advances in wind turbines to make this transition as smooth as possible. We must ensure that the use of wind energy remains at the forefront of our minds and that the development of these turbines does not negatively impact our environment.
